Painting Predicaments: How Often Should I Repaint My Home’s Exterior?

Sometimes, all it takes is the right coat of paint to completely transform your home and noticeably boost its curb appeal. However, many homeowners are unsure about how often they need to repaint their home’s exterior – is simply waiting until things look bad okay, or is it best to plan for routine, regular repainting? Here’s what you need to know.

How Often Should I Repaint My Home’s Exterior?

Most people paint their home’s exterior when it starts looking bad – however, this isn’t always a good indicator of when you need to repaint. On average, most house exteriors need painting every 5 or so years, but it also depends on the materials used to construct the home.

Brick siding, which is quite reliable and resilient, needs painting every 15 to 20 years. Other durable materials like cement fiberboard and stone can endure for 10 or so years. Wood siding tends to last 5 to 10 years, while stucco and aluminum siding generally remain in good shape for 5 years or more, depending on upkeep.

What Else Can Influence My Paint’s Lifespan?

In a perfect world, exterior paint would never fade and look incredible forever – but unfortunately, there are certain factors that will always directly impact the lifespan of your paint. In addition to the material used to build your home, other things to keep in mind include:

  • Paint Quality – Lower-quality paints might be cheaper upfront, but the fact of the matter is, they don’t look as good or last as long as higher-quality formulas. This just means you’ll have to repaint even sooner – which isn’t very cost-effective!
  • Location – Paint on homes near beaches tends to wear down faster, due to the salinity of the air and the high intensity of the sunlight.
  • Weather & Climate – If your area is pleasant and mild throughout much of the year, your paint should do much better than if it’s constantly storming or raining. The same goes for homes in drier, less humid regions.
  • Wear & Tear – You may see cracking, peeling, or bubbling after your paint’s been around for years. Your colors might also fade and become muted. Wear and tear of this nature is inevitable, but the longer the problems are there, the worse they’ll become.

Remember, when it comes to repainting your home’s exterior, there’s no sense in cutting any corners, opting for cheaper solutions, or putting off your project until things look bad. With so many different factors in play, it’s in your best interest to repaint as often as needed and keep your home looking fresh!
