No matter if you’re a new homeowner and you’ve just moved in, or if you’ve owned your house for several years, at some point you’ve probably wondered: “When is it time to repaint?” However, the answer isn’t exactly simple – each room typically has a unique timeline concerning when it needs a fresh coat of paint, and many different factors are at play. That said, here’s what you need to know about repainting the various rooms within your home.
Living Rooms
Most experts recommend a living room be painted every 5 to 7 years, to help ensure it continues to look fresh and welcoming for your family and guests. By that same logic, dining rooms, sitting rooms, parlors, and other similar spaces should be repainted just as often. Of course, if you’re frequently inhabiting these rooms, their paint might not last quite so long, so you’ll have to keep an eye on things and repaint accordingly.
Bedrooms
Adult bedrooms typically only need to be repainted every 10 years, or sooner if a chance of décor is in order. They don’t experience nearly the same amount of wear and tear as other rooms. Children’s bedrooms, though, usually need to be repainted much more often, as kids are prone to making marks and scuffs in areas they frequent. Not to mention, as they grow older and their tastes change, they might prefer a new color scheme!
Kitchens
Kitchens are similar to living rooms in the sense that they’re gathering areas, but the average kitchen is bound to have grease, stains, smoke, and other things affecting their walls. That said, it’s best to repaint this space every 3 to 5 years to ensure it remains fresh, inviting, and well-maintained.
Bathrooms
Bathroom walls have a little more responsibility than other walls in the house since they need to withstand higher levels of moisture and humidity. This means water-based paints are the way to go, but more importantly, you’ll need to keep them clean and well-maintained. To help with this, repaint these walls every 3 or 4 years. Follow this same logic when it comes to laundry rooms and mudrooms.
Hallways
Typically, hallways have the most traffic compared to other rooms within a house, meaning there’s a good chance they’ll experience scuffs, marks, scratches, and dings on their walls. It’s highly recommended that you repaint your halls every 3 years, to stay on top of all the action these spaces get.
Ceilings
Similar to low-traffic rooms, the ceilings within your home also don’t need to be painted quite as often. You can often get away with waiting 10 years or so since they don’t generally experience normal daily wear and tear.
It’s also worth mentioning that sometimes, a fresh coat of paint is in order when your personal preferences have changed; your home is your own, so customize it and personalize it however you see fit!
