Painting your home’s exterior is an exciting endeavor – not only is it the perfect opportunity to show off your personal style and design preferences, but it also allows you to radically boost your home’s curbside appeal, which is perfect for those looking to sell soon! However, did you know that there are certain times of the year that are better suited for exterior house painting? Believe it or not, external factors like temperature and weather can drastically impact the painting process. Here’s what you need to know.

Summertime Painting

Many experts agree that it’s typically best to paint your home’s exterior during the summertime – but it’s crucial to remember that summer temperatures vary across the world. Ideally, you’ll want to choose a day when the temperature and conditions are ideal for your paint to cure properly and dry consistently. This typically means warm, dry weather with no rain in the upcoming forecast. Keep in mind that if the weather is too hot, though, it can cause your paint to not be as durable or flexible. 50 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit is usually the sweet spot with mild humidity between 40% and 70%, so be sure to check the weather a week or so in advance.

Painting in Autumn

Autumn is a favorite season for many folks due to the cooler temperatures, but unfortunately, these weather changes don’t always cause favorable painting conditions. Paint has a difficult time drying properly when temperatures change drastically; if you’re somewhere where it’s hot during the day and cool at night, it can greatly impact your paint job. Painting during the beginning of the fall season is often a wise choice since the day and night temperatures are more consistent and in line with summer weather.

Painting in Winter

A good rule of thumb to remember is that if the temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, painting usually isn’t a good idea. Even though modern painting formulas can sometimes tolerate temperatures as low as 35 degrees, it’s still recommended that you wait until warmer, consistent temperatures for the benefit of your paint. Plus, the winter season is notorious for rainy, windy, and snowy weather in addition to other inclement conditions, all of which can create dangerous working environments.

Painting in Spring

The same logic can be applied here that’s used for the autumn season; it’s all about finding a window with consistently dry and warm weather. In some areas, spring arrives much more quickly – but in others, you may have to wait until the summer season is closer to kick off your project. Spring also has its fair share of unpredictable weather, so be sure that you’re giving your paint at least 24 hours of precipitation-free drying time.

Summertime stands out as the best season for exterior home painting; however, as long as you’re carefully considering the temperature and weather conditions, you might be able to get away with late spring or early autumn painting if luck is on your side. In any case, don’t hesitate to consult with a team of professionals for insight as to when the best time is for painting your home – and of course, they’ll also be able to ensure the job is well done!
